How much does a new roof cost?
In the Houston area in 2026, an installed asphalt shingle roof runs $400 to $600 per roofing square (100 square feet). A typical 25-square home lands between $10,000 and $15,000. Our 2026 replacements have averaged just under $400 per square.
What moves the price
- Size and pitch. The calculator multiplies your footprint by a pitch factor: a 6/12 roof has about 12 percent more surface than the floor under it, a 10/12 roof about 30 percent more.
- Layers. If there are two layers of old shingles to tear off, disposal and labor go up.
- Decking. Rotted plywood gets replaced by the sheet, and we photograph every sheet before it goes in. Most roofs need a few; some need none.
- Complexity. Valleys, dormers, skylights, chimneys and multiple ridges take more flashing and more time than a simple gable.
- Shingle line. A Class 4 impact-rated architectural shingle costs more per bundle than a standard one, and can earn an insurance discount that pays some of it back.
What’s in the price
Tear-off and disposal, decking inspection, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water shield at valleys and penetrations, new drip edge, starter strip, hand-nailed field shingles, new pipe boots and flashing, ridge ventilation and cap, magnet sweep and haul-off, permit when required, and photos of every stage. Calculator questions
How much does a new roof cost in the Houston area in 2026?
Installed asphalt shingle roofs run $400 to $600 per roofing square (100 square feet). Our 2026 replacements have averaged just under $400 per square. A typical 25-square home lands between $10,000 and $15,000; a 40-square two-story can run $16,000 to $24,000. Pitch, layers to remove, decking condition and the shingle line move the number.
What is a roofing square?
One roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers price by the square because material is sold that way: a bundle of architectural shingles covers about a third of a square, so a 25-square roof needs roughly 75 bundles plus starter, ridge cap and waste.
Why is my roof bigger than my house’s square footage?
Two reasons. Pitch: a 6/12 roof has about 12 percent more surface than the footprint under it, and a 10/12 roof about 30 percent more. Overhangs: eaves and porches add area the house’s square footage doesn’t count. The calculator handles the pitch; the free inspection measures the rest.
Is the calculator number my actual quote?
No. It’s a ballpark from length, width and pitch. The real price comes from a free inspection, where we measure the roof, count the penetrations, check the decking and ask which shingle you want. That number goes in writing and doesn’t change unless we find something once the roof is open, which we photograph and show you first.
