Handnail Roofing is a roofer for Montgomery, Texas and the west side of Lake Conroe: leak repairs, storm damage, full shingle replacements and free inspections, done by a small owner-run crew that hand-nails every shingle. Andy Hughes, the owner, inspects your roof himself, sends you the photos, and gives you one written price. Most repairs run $800 to $2,000, most full replacements are torn off and shingled in a day, and the inspection is free.
We’re based in Spring, about 40 minutes away: up I-45 to Hwy 105 and west, or across FM 1488 and up FM 149. April Sound, Walden on Lake Conroe, Grand Harbor and the Del Lago area off Walden Road, Bentwater on the north shore, Woodforest and the older streets around the historic downtown are all a normal working day for us. Lakefront roofs and roofs under big pines fail in different places, and we know where to look on both.
Roofing services in Montgomery
Roof repair
Pipe boots cooked by lake sun, ridge cap peeled back by wind off the water, flashing that got caulked instead of fixed. We find the entry point from the attic, repair that, and weave new shingles in. Most repairs are one visit.
Roof replacement
Tear-off to bare decking, new underlayment, ice-and-water in the valleys and at every penetration, ventilation that actually moves air, and your choice of shingle from every major brand. A typical Montgomery home is done in a day.
Hail and wind damage
We photograph bruised shingles, creased tabs and missing ridge cap the way an adjuster needs to see them. If the damage doesn’t add up to a claim, we say so and quote the repair instead.
Insurance claims
When a storm did it, we meet the adjuster on your roof, walk the scope line by line, and file the supplement if the first estimate leaves things out. No public adjuster fees.
Free roof inspections
Attic first, then the roof. You get photos of everything and a plain-English summary you can forward to a buyer, a seller or your architectural committee. No charge.
Emergency tarping
A limb through the decking or a slope stripped by a squall off the lake gets tarped fast, so the house stops taking water while the repair or claim gets sorted.
We also hang gutters, fix attic ventilation and shingle patio covers while we’re there. Asphalt shingle is what we do; metal roofs are not.
Why Montgomery homeowners call us
The owner is on your roof. Andy does the inspection, writes the price and runs the job. There’s no salesperson between you and the person who knows what your roof needs.
Every shingle is hand-nailed. A nail gun’s pressure drifts as the compressor cycles and the day heats up, so nails go in too deep on one course and sit proud on the next, and neither one holds. Our crew sets each nail by hand, straight and flush, inside the strip the manufacturer marks. It’s the part of the roof you’ll never see, and it decides whether the shingles are still there after a 60-mph gust off Lake Conroe.
One written price. The estimate is itemized and sent to a portal you can read, question and sign from your phone. If we open the roof and find rotted decking under an old leak, you get a photo and a price for that board before it’s replaced.
Photos of all of it. Before, during and after, plus the magnet sweep for nails and a walk-around with you at the end. You never have to climb up to check our work.
What Lake Conroe weather does to a Montgomery roof
Lake Conroe changes the math. A slope that faces the water takes the wind first, with nothing between the far shore and your ridge to slow it down, and it takes the afternoon sun straight on. Ridge cap, the first course at the eaves and the rake edges go first, which is why they’re the first thing we check on a lakefront inspection. Away from the water, under the pines along FM 149 and FM 2854, the problem flips: needles pile up in valleys and behind chimneys, hold water for days, and the shingles under them wear out early.
Then the heat. Attic temperatures here pass 140°F in summer and cook the oils out of a shingle years early if the attic isn’t venting. And the storms: spring hail, then the Gulf from June through November. The 2024 season put a derecho and Hurricane Beryl across Montgomery County within two months, and plenty of lake roofs lost ridge cap and tabs that nobody noticed from the driveway. We start every inspection in the attic because water trails on the rafters tell the truth before the ceiling does.
Montgomery neighborhoods we work in
April Sound, Walden on Lake Conroe, Bentwater, Grand Harbor, the Del Lago area, Woodforest, the historic downtown and the streets around the Montgomery ISD schools, the newer neighborhoods on the Lake Creek side of town, and the acreage tracts along FM 149, FM 2854 and Hwy 105, in ZIP codes 77316 and 77356. Most of the gated lake communities have an architectural committee that signs off on shingle color and style before work starts, and a gate that needs our crew on the list. We handle both with you before install day so the schedule doesn’t slip.
What roofing costs in Montgomery
Straight numbers. Most repairs run $800 to $2,000. The one we do most, a leaking pipe vent with rotted decking under it, is usually about $1,250. Full replacements in the Houston area are priced per roofing square (100 square feet), and the 2026 market runs $400 to $600 a square installed. Our 2026 replacements have averaged just under $400 per square. A typical 25-square home lands between $10,000 and $15,000, and the number moves with pitch, the layers coming off, decking condition and the shingle you choose. Big lake houses with steep, cut-up roofs carry more squares and more labor.
Financing is available, including 0% APR for up to 18 months for qualified buyers, subject to credit approval. We quote every option as a monthly payment. For a ballpark before we drive out, use the roof cost calculator.
Montgomery roofing questions
How much does a new roof cost in Montgomery, TX?
A full asphalt shingle replacement in the Houston area runs $400 to $600 per roofing square (100 square feet) installed in 2026, and our 2026 replacements have averaged just under $400 per square. A typical 25-square home lands between $10,000 and $15,000, and a big lakefront house with a steep, cut-up roof runs higher. You get an exact written number after a free inspection, and we can show it as a monthly payment.
Do I need approval from April Sound, Bentwater or Walden before a new roof?
Usually, yes. The gated lake communities around Montgomery have architectural committees that want to see the shingle color and style before work starts, and the gate needs our crew on its list for install day. We fill out the application with you, supply the shingle sample and photos the committee asks for, and handle the gate so the date holds.
How far is Montgomery from your shop, and does the drive cost me anything?
Our shop is in Spring, about 40 minutes from Montgomery by I-45 and Hwy 105 or by FM 1488 and FM 149. The inspection is free, same as anywhere we work. We group Lake Conroe inspections on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so you'll usually get a slot the same week.
Does a lakefront home on Lake Conroe need a different shingle?
Not a different type, but a better-rated one is worth it. An architectural shingle with a 130-mph wind rating, with every nail set in the nailing zone and the edges sealed down, handles wind coming across the water far better than a builder-grade three-tab. We install every line ABC Supply carries (GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, TAMKO, Atlas) and we'll tell you which upgrade earns its money on your slope and which doesn't.
Can you fix a roof leak in Montgomery in one visit?
Most of the time, yes. A cracked pipe boot, a lifted section of shingles or a bad flashing joint is a few hours of work, and even a repair with rotted decking underneath is usually done the same day. We load the materials before we leave Spring so nothing waits on a parts run.
Do you handle storm claims for Montgomery homes?
Yes. We photograph the damage the way adjusters need it, meet the adjuster on site, and work the scope and the supplement. If the damage isn't enough to justify a claim, we tell you that up front rather than have you file for nothing.
